Ham Lookup - The Amateur Radio call sign and license search callbook CD-ROM for Windows and Linux

The HAM Lookup Amateur Radio call sign and license search software and call book CD-ROM is extremely powerful and useful for a myriad of Amateur Radio operating activities.

Whether you're an avid contester and require QSL information, a net control operator keeping lists of net check-ins, or just enjoy a good ole fashioned rag chew, the feature set included in HAM Lookup will prove incredibly useful and adaptable while remaining easy to use.

HAM Lookup FEATURES

The HAM Lookup Amateur Radio callsign search engine provides the ability to perform queries based on either the ham radio Call Sign or Name/QTH information for the licensed radio amateur. Our unique 'QSO/In-the-group' functionality provides a convenient list of recently found Call Signs.

Great Circle bearing value and antenna headings

When operating a beam or any directional antenna, knowing the proper direction in which to point your antenna can be crucial. Using Ham Lookup, simply type in the call sign and you'll instantly know the appropriate beam heading for optimal shortest path, great circle communications. For a wonderful explanation of Great Circle bearing, distance and beam headings, read 'Calculating Antenna Headings' by Bob Fontaine, W9RJF on page 44 of the March 2007 issue of the ARRL's QST magazine.

Great Circle return bearing value

Ham Lookup not only displays the Great Circle beam heading that should be used for your antenna, but also the Great Circle return bearing value, or the value that should be in use by the station you're in QSO with. If you happen to be in QSO with another amateur who is operating with a beam or other directional antenna, they may be pleasantly surprised when you're able to recommend a beam heading from their perspective in effort to achieve optimal communications with you.

Great Circle distance value

The Great Circle distance value displayed by Ham Lookup indicates the effective communications distance between your station and that of the station you're in QSO with. This can be an incredibly useful value for assisting in the determinination of band conditions and related atmospheric effects.

Maidenhead Grid Square identifiers

The Maidenhead Grid Square identification system subdivides the earth or globe into individual gridsquares of 1° of latitude by 2° of longitude. Knowing and exchanging these values has become customary during QSO and various operating activities such as: DXing, contesting, digital operation, county hunters etc. Ham Lookup instantly displays the specific grid square value for each US amateur call listed.

County name

Whether you're actively involved in county hunting or not, knowing the county name of a station you've worked or heard on the air is often incredibly useful for a variety of purposes, including the determination of band conditions and the general geographic or historic location.

Latitude and Longitude Coordinates

Ham Lookup displays the specific Latitude and Longitude coordinates for each US amateur call listed. These values are in turn used to determine the Great Circle values.

Search by Call Sign:

Performing a lookup given an Amateur Radio callsign has never been easier or faster! Simply type the US or Canadian Amateur Radio callsign in the 'Call Sign' field and press ENTER or click 'SEARCH'. Upon finding a matching ham radio call sign in the US FCC or Radio Amateurs of Canada Amateur Radio license database, the text area is populated with the FCC or Radio Amateurs of Canada call book license information and a new entry is added to the 'QSO/In-the-group' list. The contents of the 'QSO/In-the-group' list can then be saved to a filename of your choosing.

Search by Name/QTH:

The 'Search by Name/QTH' tab of HAM Lookup's application dialog allows you to search for Amateur Radio licenses and call signs based on any combination of:

  • Last Name
  • First Name
  • Middle Initial
  • City
  • State
  • Zip Code

For example - to find all licensed ham radio operators in your own Zip Code - simply type in the Zip Code and press enter.

Suppose you're in QSO and despite the valiant efforts of a great station: antenna, receiver, transmitter, the QSB, QRM and QRN is beginning to get the best of a long awaited contact. You've managed good copy of the other station's first name and city, but only part of the call sign. Simply type in the First Name and City and your results may allow you to narrow down the other stations call, salvaging that essential QSO.

Using the HAM Lookup Amateur Radio callsign search callbook CD-ROM, your search results are limited only by your creativity when forming queries and performing a search!

QSO/In-the-group:

The right pane within the application dialog contains a list of sortable rows and columns reflecting the ham radio call signs you've found. This pane is referred to as the 'QSO/In-the-group' list due to its usefulness when operating on the amateur bands.

Logging - Saving callsign/license data:

Logging your QSOs has never been easier using the HAM Lookup Amateur Radio call sign search callbook CDROM. Simply populate your 'QSO/In-the-group' list with your ham radio contacts and save to a file.

This feature can prove useful for many purposes. One example is for the purposes of net control: As the net control operator takes check-ins, the call signs of the check-ins can be entered in the call sign field of the 'Search by Call Sign' tab resulting in entries in the 'QSO/In-the-group' list. The resulting list can then be saved to a file as the tally of checkins to the net.

Export HAM Lookup data:

Export your 'QSO/In-the-group' ham radio logging data to a tab-delimited text file using the Ham Lookup Amateur Radio callsign search callbook CD-ROM.

The exported text file can then be loaded into a word processor, spreadsheet or database application for further utilization. This feature is ideally suited for contesting, ham radio clubs, traffic nets and many other useful purposes. Remember - the utility and usefulness of Ham Lookup is limited only by your creativity!

Wireless ready - self contained unit!

With the HAM Lookup Amateur Radio callsign search callbook CDROM installed on your computer, you can search the Amateur Radio license and ham radio call sign data contained in both the US FCC and Radio Amateurs of Canada license databases anytime, anywhere in true wireless fashion. Canadian Amateur Radio callbook database

Search the Canadian Amateur radio callbook database!

FREE! - Always have the latest callbook data

With nearly every passing day, the FCC and Radio Amateurs of Canada issue new Amateur Radio licenses and callsigns and grants upgrades, renewals and change-of-address for existing licensees, quickly rendering the Amateur Radio license data in other ham radio callbook CD-ROMs obsolete. If you choose our competitor's callbook, you'll be resigned to repeatedly re-purchasing their product in order to have up-to-date license data.

The Ham Lookup Amateur Radio call sign search CDROM takes a different approach!

Every HAM Lookup callbook CDROM contains the latest, public access Amateur Radio license database produced regularly by the U.S. FCC and Canada's RAC. Even though HAM Lookup has NO internet or network capability or functionality, you can download the latest FCC Amateur Radio license database files from the FCC's website using your web browser and update your virtual callbook ham radio license data at any time and at NO COST.

Suppose someone you know recently passed the amateur radio licensing exam and got their first ham radio ticket. If you're using one of our competitor's callbooks, you'll likely have to wait a long time and pay a high price to get your callbook data updated to reflect such an addition to the database!

If you're the elmer for that someone special who just got their first ham radio ticket, you'll want to be able to impress your new protege by demonstrating that they are now officially a member of the wonderful fellowship of Amateur Radio operators. Nothing makes a new licensee feel that great sense of pride, accomplishment and belonging like performing a lookup and finding their entry reflecting the newly obtained ham radio ticket!

It seems like licensed amateur radio operators are always moving, upgrading, renewing and even obtaining a vanity call sign grant.
